Growing up on the east side of Germany, there wasn’t a lot of opportunities. But… I was good at gymnastics, so I trained for the olympics and at 18 years old I was one of the youngest there, in 1988.
Our team won silver that year… but over time the sport was really hard on my body. Still, I continued and at the 1996 olympic games, I won a gold medal on the high bar. I was taking painkillers for my entire 14 year athletic career.
